MAINE SENATE HOPEFUL RUINED! POPULIST STAR FALLS IN SHOCK SCANDAL

The New Republic · 2026-07-15

A bombshell accusation of sexual assault has shattered the rising star of Maine Senate hopeful Graham Platner, forcing his sudden exit from the political arena. While the candidate's scandalous past has doomed his run, Democrats must not abandon the populist crusade to win over rural, working-class voters. If the party clings to safe, establishment choices, they risk total ruin at the hands of the conservative machine.

**PORTLAND, Me., Oct. —** A political thunderbolt of the most scandalous variety struck the Pine Tree State Wednesday night, leaving the high-hats of the Democratic establishment holding a very empty, very sticky bag.

Graham Platner—the rough-and-tumble darling of the radical wing, the self-styled champion of the working stiff—has thrown in the sponge. Via a midnight moving-picture broadcast, the candidate announced the curtain has run down on his bid for the U.S. Senate.

The fatal blow? A scandalous charge of dishonorable conduct leveled by a former sweetheart. For weeks, rumors of Platner’s checkered ledger with the fairer sex had whispered through the speakeasies of Portland, to say nothing of the sinister Prussian swastika branded upon his very flesh. But this latest accusation of assault was the knockout punch. The candidate is down for the count, and his corner has thrown in the towel.

#### **THE DARLING OF THE PARLOR BOLSHEVIKS**

How did such a bad egg get so close to the brass ring?

To hear the backroom boys tell it, Platner was the bee's knees. In the local wards, Maine liberals crowded his rallies like gents to a gin joint, drunk on his fiery, anti-millionaire speeches. Out in the big cities, the soapbox scribes—including the crusading journalist Ryan Grim and the venerable socialist firebrand Senator Bernie Sanders—backed the oysterman to give the high-hat establishment choice, Governor Janet Mills, the old heave-ho.

Even the slick talking-machine pundits of the wireless—the very same high-society fellas who host the popular *“Pod Save America”* broadcasts—thought Platner was the cat’s meow. They hoped this gun-toting, leather-necked veteran of the soil could woo the rural voters away from the Republican Grand Dame, Senator Susan Collins, and show the national party how to win back the heartland.

Your humble correspondent had a foot in both camps. And why not? The Donkey Party has a math problem, see?

#### **THE HARD BOILED FACTS OF THE VOTING BOOTH**

The metropolitan swells and college-bred ladies aren't enough to carry the day against the formidable Elephant machine. If the Democrats want to lick the right-wing ring, they need the fellas in the fields. The cold, hard numbers of the last great national rumbles of ’16 and ’24 tell the story: the GOP keeps clean-sweeping the white fellas (57 percent), the non-college working stiffs (63 percent), and the rustic farm-dwellers (a whopping 69 percent).

So, when a white, gun-owning veteran from the backwoods steps up, the party bosses treat him like a million bucks. It’s a bit of political "affirmative action" for the rugged male. Let's be frank: the party elites would never have cheered so loudly for a lady or a colored candidate with a crazy tattoo and wild notions. They tolerated Platner’s rough edges because they wanted his rough-neck appeal.

#### **THE TRAGEDY OF THE “REPUBLICAN-LITE” FLIVVER**

But do not let this disaster sour the party on new ideas! For what is the alternative?

The high-hat counselors of the party always advise running to the right, chasing the mythical "Anti-Trump Republican" voter. We saw how that flivver stalled in the great election of '24. Lady Kamala Harris spent the final weeks of her campaign abandoning her populist tunes, bragging that Uncle Sam’s army would remain the "most lethal" on the globe, and shouting for more guards at the border. It was a wet blanket of a platform, and it sent the voters straight to sleep—or straight to the GOP!

#### **TWO PATHS TO VICTORY: THE PREACHER AND THE TRUST-BUSTER**

If the Democrats wish to avoid the knockout blow in '26 and '28, they must look to other, cleaner unorthodoxies. Two schemes have already proven their worth:

**First, the Biography Play.** Look to Georgia’s Reverend Raphael Warnock, who wins over the skeptics by thumping the Good Book, or Kentucky’s Andy Beshear, with his wholesome, family-man charm. Or look to the patriotic dames—Slotkin, Spanberger, and Sherrill—who parleyed their secret-service and military laurels into statewide victories.

**Second, the Trust-Busters.** Young Turks like Senator Jon Ossoff and Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed are running not against the GOP, but against the Fat Cats and the Wall Street Monopolies. Even in the big cities, anti-establishment rebels like New York’s Zohran Mamdani are turning the tables by fighting the bosses of both parties.

#### **THE BELL HAS RUNG**

Would Platner’s populist oysterman act have beaten Susan Collins in November? We’ll never know. The ledger of his sins was too heavy to carry.

But do not let the defeatists tell you that the old, safe way is the only way. Boss Chuck Schumer doesn’t have the magic formula, and neither do the slick city strategists who cooked up the Platner campaign.

The standard-bearers of the old guard—Hillary Clinton and Lady Harris—both hit the canvas. The Donkey Party shouldn’t only look for white men with strange day-jobs to save them, but they must find candidates who can make the working man stop, listen, and think twice. Even if they have to fish them out of an oyster boat!

Bullets

SENSATIONAL DEBACLE! Graham Platner suspends his Senate campaign via video after allegations of sexual assault emerge from his past.
COALITION IN SHACKLES! Leftist and moderate Democrats alike are left reeling after rallying behind the controversial, tatted populist.
THE WHITE-MALE PANACEA! Party elites pinned their hopes on Platner’s rustic appeal to charm the elusive rural vote away from the GOP.
A WARNING TO CHIEF CHUCK SCHUMER! The party's high-and-mighty must continue to experiment with anti-establishment voices rather than retreat to safe, losing candidates.

Poem

The oyster farmer cast his net,

Upon a rough and stormy sea,

A savior whom the party met

To break the chains of apathy.

With rugged grace and ink of old,

He marched into the rural night,

A tale of populist fire told,

To put the stubborn foe to flight.

But shadows lurked behind the grin,

A sudden storm, a whispered name,

Revealed the rot that lay within,

And turned his shining hope to shame.

Yet do not flee the untamed shore,

Nor seek the safe and dusty track,

For compromise will win no war,

And caution cannot turn them back.

Though this clay idol fell to dust,

The hungry crowd still seeks a sign,

A voice that weary hearts can trust,

Beyond the party's fading line.
