CANUCK SMOKE CHOKES U.S. CITIES! TRUMP VOWS TARIFF WAR ON SMOKY NORTH

Democracy Now · 2026-07-22

Severe Canadian wildfires have blanketed North American cities in hazardous smoke, prompting Donald Trump to threaten Canada with tariffs over the drifting pollution. While Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney blamed the fires on the climate crisis, he faces intense domestic backlash for simultaneously backing a multi-billion-dollar oil pipeline expansion. This clash highlights the sharp contradiction between political climate rhetoric and continued state support for fossil fuels.

**GOTHAM CITY —** A choking, sulfurous shroud of gray death has descended upon the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America, turning our fair skies into a hellish, dim-lit nightmare!

From the pine-forested wilds of the Great White North, nearly one thousand raging forest fires are belching out a poisonous smog, suffocating hordes of citizens from the wind-swept streets of Chicago and Detroit to the high-rise canyons of New York. Authorities warn this is the second-worst smoke disaster in modern Gotham history, leaving millions coughing for mercy.

While the red menace of the northern blazes consumes the wildwoods, it is the poorest who pay the dearest price. Up in the Dominion, thousands of Indigenous folks have been routed from their ancestral hearths, fleeing the roaring flames with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They now huddle in canvas tents in Thunder Bay, refugees in their own land because there ain't a room to be had!

### **THE BIG CHEESE ROARS!**

Enter President Trump, the nation’s Chief Executive, who has flown into a towering rage over the tainted winds! Taking to his bully pulpit, the President lobbed a rhetorical bombshell across the border, threatening to slap heavy tariffs on Canadian goods.

"The United States is being invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air!" Trump bellowed in a fiery dispatch. "It is dangerous and totally unacceptable!"

Yet, the President remains mum on the talk of "climate change"—a theory the highbrow eggheads and scientists insist is the real spark behind these colossal conflagrations.

### **A DISPATCH FROM THE FRONT**

To get the lowdown on this international squabble, our intrepid scribe, Miss Amy Goodman of the *Democracy Now!* wire, called up Montreal to speak with Rachel Gilmore, a straight-shooting lady journalist of the *Bubble Pop* press.

"The situation is downright horrifying," Miss Gilmore reported through the static of the wireless. "We are watching the world burn in real-time, and the folks are crying out for help."

Gilmore pulled no punches regarding Trump’s tariff threats, calling his bluster "offensive" and "tone-deaf," especially since a brave Canadian firefighter had just perished in Colorado fighting Uncle Sam's own blazes.

### **THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS DANDY AND THE OIL BARONS**

But the plot thickens! While Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, plays the high-hat climate champion on the global stage, back home he’s playing a different tune.

Carney has just shook hands with Alberta’s Premier, the feisty Danielle Smith, to announce a multibillion-dollar pipeline scheme to pump one million barrels of "black gold" daily from the landlocked prairies of Alberta straight to the Pacific shore. Carney claims this will break Canada's economic dependence on Uncle Sam—a move that has reportedly sent President Trump into a blue fit.

But Gilmore says Carney's big deal is pure baloney!

"The taxpayers already shelled out a whopping 34 billion smackers for the last pipeline, and the books won't balance on this new one for thirty years!" Gilmore warned. "The only way this pipeline makes a dime is if we abandon the fight against climate change entirely!"

Even worse, critics say Carney is peddling a "snake oil" solution. His grand plan to capture carbon and store it underground is nothing but a shell game. He’s giving fat tax credits to the big oil trusts, who use the captured gas to frack even more crude out of the dying earth!

As the skies turn yellow and the politicians bicker, the common man is left to ask: *Who will extinguish the flames?*

Poem

The northern forests burn to ash and bone,

As choking haze is blown across the state.

A leader stands upon a gilded throne,

To curse the wind and monetize his hate.

The sky turns orange, thick with heavy breath,

While displaced tribes find shelter in the cold.

Yet statesmen trade the warnings of our death,

For pipelines carrying the liquid gold.

They speak of green and whisper of the sky,

But sign the papers for the tar and sand.

The smoke rolls south, a suffocating lie,

As greed consumes the scarred and burning land.
